Leave it to Ryan Gosling to melt our hearts into a puddle of mush; the actor has displayed a sweet tribute to his baby daughter, Esmeralda. He stepped out in LA yesterday with her name inked across four fingers on his left hand, but is it a DIY pen job or a permanent tattoo?

Many believe the fine etchings came courtesy of a black biro, while others suspect he may have got a real deal 'Esme' inking on his knuckles. Either way, it's pretty adorable that Ryan is wearing his daughter's name, providing he went about it in a safe and sensible manner.

The actor has been known to give himself homemade tattoos in the past, which all of us can agree is a downright risky game to play. Tattoos should always be done in a safe and sterile environment, not to mention working with experts reduces the risk of unsightly mistakes.

In 2011, Ryan told the Metro of an inking session gone awry, in which his homemade design inadvertently looked more like a cactus. He said: "One of my tattoos is supposed to be a monster's hand dropping a bloody heart but I did it myself with a tattoo kit so it looks like a cactus."
