We love a canny beauty buy, something that solves a need in a way we wish we'd thought of. So when we discovered Secret Fashion Fixes, a solution site for girlie dilemmas, we had to see if some of the intended genius inventions are worth investing in.

Up first, we tried the Mascara Shield (£11). I'm the biggest mascara fan I know but my addiction lends itself to slip-ups - and sooty smudges. Can I say 'so long' to these with this little plastic device? I held in underneath my top and bottom lashes while applying my mascara and while it takes getting used to (and looks a bit out-there) it works a treat. No doubt my hubby with mock but this is one handy little hack.

Should you have the same problem as me and no shield to hand, you might also appreciate these Eye Makeup Corrector & Remover buds. The cotton swaps are pre-filled with liquid makeup remover which is released into the buds when you snap the ends. Clever. They worked well around my sensitive eye area and I'd recommend them for on-the-go touch ups, but at £7.85 for 24 I think they're a bit indulgent for daily use. A cheaper alternative is to use a dot of primer on a regular cotton bud (the best is Smashbox Photo Finish Primer) which acts as a magic eraser for smudges and spills.

If you suffer from flat hair like I do, then this last one could be a valuable investment. The Teeze W/eez To Go (£11) is a teeny comb that has multi-row teeth to backcomb your roots with fewer strokes. In a couple of goes it bigged-up my hair with some much-needed volume. This one's staying in my handbag.
